Friderik Irenej Baraga (1797–1868) was a missionary among northern native Americans, a devotional writer and, from 1853 onwards, the Bishop of Upper Michigan, USA. He had a strong influance on the piety of 19th century Slovenes. He is considered on of the greatest missionaries in America of that time. He wrote six books in the native language of the Chippewa and Ottawa tribes, including a dictionary and grammar of the Chippewan language. The painting is the only known self-portrait of him. It shows a man aged about 30 years.
